‘If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.’
— Rachel Carson
‘The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.’
— Albert Einstein
Something subtle has begun to open up in me this summer. I don’t want to over-think it or analyze it, but if I had to put a name to it, I would call it wonderment.
When my daughter is happy just to BE, whether she is running with her “kite”(a piece of twine), or playing for hours in the pebbles with pail and shovel, it changes me. I feel Gray’s anticipation over the good things happening in his life. I see Niles connecting with the world around him in meaningful ways. Hoodie is engaged at work and at home learning that his value is in who he is, not what he does.
I am not “trying” to be mindful or savor the moments.
I just am. They just are. We just are. And it’s good.
